MARINE COOKS AND STEWARDS
j WELLINGTON, May 12 In the Arbitration Court the Federated Cooks’ and Stewards’ Union asked for tlie wages granted in the new Aus--1 tralian award. In regard to the hours of work when |at sea, it was asked that they should not exceed eight in any one day, and that they should lie worked between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. At present the hours of work are 10 per day, the workers concerned being tlie only ones in. New Zealand who have not yet enjoyed an eight hour day. Tlie same hours are being asked in Court, but it was suggested that they should be worked lietwecn 7 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. Three shillings per hour is asked for overtime or in the alternative cash wages plus an allowance for board and lodging, and then time and a half. WELLINGTON, May 12 In the case before the Arbitration Court, where the cooks and stewards sought to secure increased wages and shorter working hours on the lines of tlie Australian award, it was stated a ! slump had seriously affected shipping. • The companies on their own behalf, ' urged that wages should be reduced instead of increased. INVESTIGATING PRICES. | AUCKLAND, May 12. | The investigation of prices is to continue, after the Prices Tribunals have been disbanded at the end of the month This stntemnt was made by Mr McDonald (Chairman of the Board of Trade) to-day. The Board’s officials in various centres will carry on the work done by the Tribunals and any cases investigated bv them would be reported on to the Board.
.MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS. GISBORNE, May 13. fSTlie Minister of Public Works stated lie bad decided to provide relief for unemployed in this district, in the form of road work at Where rata bill, on the Gisborne-Napier road. He could offer no encouragement as to the immediate tackling of railway construction here, in a businesslike manner, until be was able to concentrate plant and labour on the route. Mr Coates continued bis tour northward this morning.
SHIPWRECK AID. DUNEDIN, May 13. The Shipwreck Relief Society has instructed Captain Fleming, its Auckland representative to reimburse the crew of the Tasman £lO each, for loss of clothes. THE LOST TASMAN. WHAKATANE, May 13. The wrecked Tasman is in alxmt 100 feet of water. An inspection of the sea this morning failed to find any trace of the ship or cargo. N.Z. UNION DECISIONS. ■WELLINGTON, May 12. The New Zealand Rugby Union decided to play the Inter-Island match at Christchurch on July 2, and ‘•Possibles” versus “Pfobables” at Wellingtos, July 6. The North Island selectors are Messrs Malone, Nicholson and Griffiths; South Island, Messrs Wilson Stewart, and Noble Adams.
