It was mentioned at the close of the County Council meeting yesterday that the annual meeting of the Council for the election of Chairman would be held on Wednesday, May 25th, a fortnight hence. The life of the present Council lias been similarly extended also, so that the present members instead of going out of office in November 1923 that is three years from the date of election—will remain in office till May 1914. The Westland Chamber of Commerce was advised to-day that fresh tenders are being called for the construction of a permanent bridge at Waitangi river. South Westland. The Public Works Department does not approve of a planked crossing at the ford as it would be liable to be buried or carried away in flood time.

It is understood that the Canterbuiy Progress League is arranging through the Public Works Department to be supplied with weekly reports of the progress being made with the Otira tunnel works. A meeting will be held at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock this evening to arrange for a citizen s tribute to Revd. Dr. Holloway shortly leaving the district. The citizens’ movement, it is proposed to associate with the church presentation to the Revd. Doctor, which will take place at All Saints’ Sunday Schoolroom to-morrow evening. All citizens desirous of joining in the public tribute are desired to attend this evening’s preliminary meeting.

The funeral of the late Mr Joseph Healey, Marine Engineer to the Goverilmelit, took place at Wellington on Tuesday of last week, after a Requiem Mass had been celebrated by the Rev Father Rignali fit the Basilica. The cortege included a large and representative gathering of old friends aiid representatives of tiie shipping and engineering interests. Members of the Australian Institute of Marine Engineers and colleagues from each branch of the Marine and Inspection of Machinery Departments attended bis funeral to pay their last respects to a.brother officer.

The usual fortnightly dance was held in the Supreme Hall last evening by the Kiwi Football Club, and proved a huge success, the floor being crowded with dancers. The music was supplied by Mr Lawn and was "’ell up to the usual standard. Extras were played by Misses Gillooly and Pascoe, and Mr Rutherford. During the evening a dainty supper was harided round and done full justice to. Mr Kortegnst on behalf of the Club thanked all present for their attendance there that evening and also stated that it was the intention of the Club to hold a big dance on Empire Night, May 24th. Dancing was kept up till the early hours of the morning.
