The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday last. Piesent—-Messrs E. H. Andrews, (chairman), W. A. Banks, H. J. Bignell, S. 6. ’Thompson, T. Hughes, A. Pevcrill, W. P. Spencer, J. Gow, J. Maze, J. Jamieson, and' Hon. J. Grimmond, M.L.C ’‘ l BUILDING COMMITTEE.
Tltoßuilding Committee’s report included " ' the following recommendations :
Arahura Road —Consideration of an application from the Headmaster for extensive renovation of teache’s residence was deferred pending receipt of a ‘report’“from the Foreman. ‘ ißaktown. —The Foreman to attend to requirements suggested by the Health Officer. Oobde.ii.—ln connection with a protest from the Committee it was resolved to reply that building operations would be started when conditions became favourable. t Jvaiata—Mr Bignell reported that it would he possible to remove the old school building from Kamaka and re-erc-t it at Kaiata at a probable cost of CIC3. It was ’ resolved to apply to the Department for permission and a grant to have this done. Kanieri—Correspondence was received from the Committee, Board’s Foreman, and Department regarding the destruction of the school building by fire on April 22nd. A "report of an inquiry’ conducted by Messrs Grimmond and Bignell was presented, in which the opinion was expressed that the cause of the Jfire was a defective chimney, such defect ‘ not being apparent under ordinary inspection. It was resolved that the school in tjie meantime be held in the Anglican Church property. Qtira..—The Committee’s application for building of demolished fuel shed was referred to the foreman for re-
port Totara flat: —The Foreman to attend to spouting repairs; erection of verandah held over. Waitaha: —lt was resolved to state in reply to the Committee’s enquiry that the grant promised for ground improvements was not available at present. Wataroa.—A letter was received from the Department .making a grant of £747 for new school. It„ was resolved to substitute Silver Tine Piles for concrete foundations. The Foreman’s report for the month was received and adopted. It was resolved to apply for an additional grant for levelling and foundations at Greymouth New Technical School. In reply to Mr Grimmond the chairman stated that temporary accommodation had been got for the Kanieri school children; an application for a vote for the rebuilding of the school had been forwarded to the Department. The report was adopted. BEDDON MEMORIAL MEDAL. The Greymouth School Committee forwarded a motion protesting against the recent award of the Seddon Memorial Medal, and stating that three scholars in the Grey District School received more marks than those to whom the medal was awarded. The secretary said that the medal had been awarded on the principle followed during the past four or five years, and had gone to scholars who had properly entered. Mr Bignell, in reply to a question, said that one award went to the Runanga Convent school and the other to the Grey Convent School. It was decided on the motion of Mr Bignell to inform the Greymouth Committee that in the opinion of the Board the ’ fault* was with those connected with the school, and that the award must stand. Greymouth Technical School—After due consideration it was agreed to recommend that, subject to the Department’s approval Mr E. L. Ivehoe of Dunedin lie appointed to the position. APPOINTMENT’S COMMITTEE. Appointments recommended were made as follows: Ofira—Miss M. O’Donnell, assistant mistress. Runanga,—Miss E. G. Dwyer, assistant mistress. Waitaha—Miss F. Duncan, sole teacher. Chertsey : —Subject to the School Committee’s approval, Miss A. Lenmy, Mistress, was granted six months’ leave of absence owing to private circumstances. Resignations accepted included the following: Greymouth,—Miss S- B. Struthers, Assistant Mistress. Koiterarigi.,—Miss K. A. Tlallinan, sole teacher. Totart Flat—Mr, J. W. Maloney, sole teacher. Goldsborough—A letter was received from the Committee, objecting to tho withdrawal of Miss Bourke without notice. It was agreed to ask Mr McCaskill, Inspector, to explain the circumstances under which Miss Bourke had been withdrawn in order that she might enter the Training College. It was decided to advertise the'vacancy in the ordinary course. Mr White (Truant Officer) reported the attendance to be good; 41 ordinary notices and 4 of a final nature had been issued. In three eases taken into Court during the’ previous month good improvement had 1 been shown. Inspection reports were received on the following* schools: —Bruce Bay, Maintain, OkuTti, Okarito, Okarito Forks, Waiho Gorge, Wataroa.
