At the Bawra wool sale there was good competition at full late rates, Yorkshire taking combing merinos. The continent competed very keenly for their sorts, particularly pieces, bellies and carbonising sorts. Practical}; everything was sold.

Mr Massey, in the course of an interview, said the British Dominions bordering the Pacific ocean must strengthen their naval defences. Commenting on the Anglo-Japanese agree: ment, he said there could be no objection to a renewal, provided that the Dominions were given the right to choose their own citizens. Any attempt to relieve New Zealand of the mandates over the Pacific Islands or to change the Samoan policy would he intolerable.

The Marchioness of Conyghnm, who is an Australian, obtained a divorce at Dublin on the grounds of her husband’s misconduct.

CANTON, May 7
Interviewed, Dr. Sun Yah Sen declared that his first move after his inauguration as President of Canton will be to seek foreign recognition. He is planning the unification of China on the principle of local autonomy, under which military governments will be abolished, and the army reduced to a minimum. He will restore China's position by denouncing Japan’s 21 demands which are still the backbone of her policy. China’s trouble for the last four years has been directly duq to Japan’s militarists, who aim to Koreaise China. Dr Sun Yat Sen added that America had unknowingly aided 1 Japan by recognising. Hsu as head of the opposing Pekin Government, whom Japan has put in office. “We desire proper foreign aid, and are in favour of a Consortium,” he said, “but the moncj loaned bn the Pekin party is harmful, for Pekin is powerless, and is in militarists hands.”
He added:—The province of Kwang si is mobilising 50,000 troops against Canton, and we hope to withstand the shock.”

ZAGHLOUL NOT SUPPORTED

The official Ministry decided not to co-operate with Zaghloul and will not include him in tbo London delegation.
Much interest is being shown by the people of Lawrence and surrounding district in the proposed celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Gabriel’s Gully, at whieh_a number of the pioneers now resident in different parts of the Dominion have signified their intention of being present. It is proposed that the proceedings will extend from Thursday, 19thj till the afternoon of Saturday, 21st inst. The programme is as follows:—Friday morning: visiting pioneers to be conducted to the various parts of the diggings where they worked in the good old days, in the afternoon a social gathering will he held under the auspices of the ladies of the town and district, and in the evening a dinner will be given in honour of the visiting pioneers to be followed by a smoke social in the Town Hall. During their sojourn in Lawrence the visiting- pioneers will be the guests of the citizens. The Hon. Mri and Mrs Grimmond, of Ross, purpose being present at the gathering. Mr Grimmond was at the Gabriel’s rush in its infancy.
