Some spurious half-crowns are at present iii circulation in Ashbuiton. T\%u have l>een tendered there during the last month, and one actually got into a bank without being detected. The counterfeits are dull in colour, do not ring like a true half-crown, and are made of some sort of soft metal—probably a mixture of lead and aluminium. The coins are said to he a very good imitation.
In discussing the money market the ‘‘N.Z. Trade Review” says: “In the past twelve months the banks have been called on for twenty millions more in advances, with deposits slightly on the decrease. It will take some months of very restricted importation and increased exports to right the position, but we expect to see some improvement in a few months.”
A Dunedin correspondent states: It is understood that retail drapers
are endeavouring to retain high prices as long as possible, and that a meeting of .representatives of the trade was held last- Friday for the purpose of protesting against the action of certain wholesalers in cutting prices, on the ground that, having previously purchased from these wholesale firms at high prices, they had to enter into competition with traders who are now purchasing at reduced prices.
The money-thieving gang is still at work in the Wellington hotels. On Wednesday night a. man staying at one of the principal hotels had £l4 stolen from his room. Others had sums taken from their clothes. In one room a married man -.found his clothes in the doorway, after his wife had woke him up, to say she heard someone in the room. The streets were lit up with electric light on Saturday evening, and the result was eminently successful. The wet, dark stonily night was an ideal one to find the effect, and this was very satisfactory, winning general approval. Nefct evening (Sunday) was also wet and stormy, and tlV> streets’ lighting reverting hack to the gas jets, looked extremely dark and miserable.
. Owing to the heavy northerly gale ■ that prevailed on Saturday evening, the t open-air concert on Cass Square was postponed. The electric light had been fitted on the Square, and instead, the town streets were illuminated. The gale continued yesterday, being extremely boisterous, the gale changing j round to the south-west, with heavy j rain and iulil squalls.
