CHASE THROUGH THE BUSH.

HALF-OASTE PRISONERS recaptured. SYDNEY, April 26. The police recently had an exciting hunt alter two half-caste prisons who escaped from the lock-up in Ivatoomba, in the Blue Mountains, and got clear away into the heart of the ranges. The two young men, who were wanted on a minor criminal charge managed to creep out of the lock-up soon after dusk on April 13th., and in a few minutes, they had disappeared into one of the numerous deep gorges which lie all around Katoomba. Their escape was noticed very soon after wards, but it was then too dark to do anything. ' The police, with several volunteer searchers, were out at daylight next morning, but by that time the mountains had completely swallowed the fugitives. For over a week the police pin sued their wearisbme search over the mountains—but it was like seeking the needle in the haystack. Not a trace of the men was found. Then it was decided to visit a very isolated settlement of half-castes in the Burragorang Valley, and three constables set oil last Sunday morning. 'They slept that night m the bush, and were on the outskirts of the settlement at dawn otn Monday, laying hidden, they presently saw two men moving about a small humpy on the edge of the settlement in the bush. A grownover watercourse ran up to the back door. Two constables hid in the rear and one boldly approached the front door 1 . Nothing stirred until he was knocking, when there was a faint scuffle within and two men slipped noiselessly through the back door and dived into the watercourse. They lay ' low there for a while. The hidden policemen noticed that the suspects carried a sporting rifle. The constable walked through the

humpy and appeared outside the back door. Thereupon the two men began to slink away along the bed of the creek. Rounding a bend, they ran right into and found themselves covered by one of the waiting constables. They surrendered without a struggle. The other constables came up and hand-cuffed them. The party arrived back in Katoomba on Tuesday evening. *
