ROSS BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Ross Brough Council took place at the Coronation Hall on Wednesday evening.—Present—S. P. Evans Esq., (Mayor), Councillors A. W. Upjohn, W. 0. Jones, C. Black H. McMullnn, N. J. Phillips, J. Miriehan, J. Pethig and 13. Roberts

The Returning Officer read the results of the recent Mayoral and Council elections, the Mayor and Councillors made the usual declaration and took their seats.

The Councillors congratulated Mr Evans on again being returned as Mayor. The Mayor acknowledged the congratulations and extended a hearty welcome to both the old and new Councillors and impressed upon them the responsible position they were now placed in. He hoped all would work) together for the general welfare of the Borough and at the end of their term they will have accomplished some substantial improvements in the town. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From James Allen asking for ‘uthority to erect a gate across Lime Road near storm channel and promising if request granted to plant several chains of ornamental shrubs along said road.—Received and request granted From John Burns submitting list of machinery.—Received.

From Ross Football Club asking for permission to charge admission to Recreation ground on occasion of football matches and also asking for use of Totarn Hall for meetings.—Received and request granted. From Postal Department asking if Council had any objection to the lopping of trees in Moorhouse street which were interfering with the working of the telephone wires.—Received; Resolved to notify the Department that the Council could not accede to the request as the trees were planted many years ago for ornamental purposes and tho wires had later been erected immediately over the line of trees.

From M. Nolan applying for lease of a piece of land adjoining Cemetery Reserve.—Received; referred to Reserves Committee to report on at next meeting of Council. From Government Statistician asking for Statistical returns for Borough.— Received and referred to Town Clerk.

It was resolved to thank Mr T. W. Bruce for according to tho Council’s request to represent them on Hokitika Harbour Board and a vote of thanks was also recorded in favour of the Mayor for acting in a similar capacity during the past term. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr F. Moore for his past sendees ns 3 councillor.

Tt was resolved the Council meetings be in future held on tho first and third Wednesdays in each month

Or. Pethig brought up the matter of the wandering cattle nuisance in the borough, the matter being discussed at length. It was finally decided to appoint a ranger and that he .. be instructed to sue owners of all wandering stock as notices recently serv’d on such owners were being ignored. 'Pile following committees were -ct ii]) for the ensuing six months: Public Works:—Crs Minehaa (chair), Jones, Thomson and Pethig. Finaneo—Ors. Phillips (Chair), MeMullan (chair), Huberts and Min oh an Reserves: —Ors. Upjohn (Clmir) Thomson and Phillips.

■Baths and Lighting: —Crs. Thomson (chair), Jones, Black and Pethig. .Library—Crs. Phillips, Roberts and Upjohn. To sign documents:—Crs Phillips, and Black.

Tho Mayor to ho member of all committees, ex-officio. • On the motion of the Mayor and Cr Pethig. Cr. A. W. Upjohn was appointed Deputy-Mayor. The meeting then terminated.

At the conclusion of the council meeting the Mayor invited the councillors to join him in some refreshments when a pleasant half hour was spent.
