HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The new Council met at 7.30 p.ni. Present—The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) Messrs H. M. Coulson, J. Lloyd, A. Parkhill, R. F. Perliam, A. G. Pilkington, F. McGregor, G. H. Blank, J. King, and G. A. AA’ood. THE NEAV COUNCIL.
Th* Returning Officer reported the election of Mayor and Council as above, and that the informal loan poll for a loan of £6OOO had been carried.— Received.
The Mayor and Councillors then made the usual declaration of office.
The A lay or congratulated Councillors on their election. They had a difficult year before them. There were many matters that required their attention and the most important one he thought was that of the water supply. The first tiling to find out was the reason why the supply of water coming through the pipes now was not of the same quantity to what it had been two or three years ago. If this was bound out and rectified the supply would he‘much improved and the repairs to the reseivoir would not he so urgent a matter. There wore other matters in the to"n requiring attention which could be given as they came forward. In a short time they would have the town Tit up with electric light, which should result in the town being the best lighted on the Coast.
Mr Coulson congratulated the Alayor on his re-election unopposed for a further term of office.
Alessrs McGregor, Parkhill and Wood generally endorsed the welcome. Air Perliam endorsed the remarks and expressed his appreciation of being elected. He would like the Borough to fall in with the views of the Beautifying Association to help to make it more attractive, both for the townspeople and visitors. Alessrs Pilkington, Blank, King and Lloyd also joined in the general congratulation.
Air Perry thanked members lor their kind wishes. He assured them that any fresh ideas or suggestions would receive attention and assured them that the recommendations of the Beautifying Association would receive tneir best attention in the endeavour to improve the general attractiveness of the town. He thanked them again for their good wishes.

From Capt A. Steelman, Greymouth, stating it was proposed to hold a display of war trophies at Hokitika and inviting support of Council.—Received. The .Mayor’s action in offering use of Town Hall was approved. From Westland County Council, enquiring if the Council were disposed to sell the moulds for large concrete pipes, that it was understood the Council did not intend using.—Received. It was stated the moulds referred to -wore for 3ft pipes. Referred to Public AA’orks Committee to arrange.
From A. G. Duncraft, Dunedin, offering to quote for wood pipes.—Received ; Town Clerk to reply and also to make enquiries from the Mosgiel Borough Council on same subject. _ From High School Board, asking for appointment of a representative.—Received. Ah- Lloyd moved that Air J. King he reappointed.—Seconded by Mr Coulson and carried. * From Hokitika Beautifying Society, conveying resolution inviting the Council to include some members of the Beautifying Society on the Reserves Committee of the Council.—Received. Mr Blank said that the Council had nine members and they should lie able to look after the affairs of the Borough. He moved that the Council reply that it cannot see its way to give effect to the request.—Seconded by Air Lloyd. The ALavor said there were members of the Beautifying Society on the Council and the request would he met by appointing them members of the Reserves Committee.
Mr Perliam thought the wrong inference was taken by -Mr Blank. The> only desired to confer as to the best means of carrying on improvenients.
Mr Pilkington said the letter had been written before the Council election had taken place. On Mr Coulson’s suggestion the motion was withdrawn and consideration deferred until the committees were appointed. From M. Groufskv, drawing attention to the state of the drains in the vicinity of her residence, and asking for early attention. —Received.
M r Lloyd moved the Public Works Committee he authorised to attend to j the matter. Mr Parkhill said what was the good of referring it to the Public Works Committee. They never did anything. Quite a number of matters had been referred to them and nothing was done. Mr Coulson seconded the motion which was agreed to. From Public Trustee, Wellington, | drawing attention to increase in rate of interest on Borough abattoir loan account. —Received. From A. O. Scott, Preference to care of a grave in cemetery and arranging for care and upkeep, by providing ft fund returning £1 per year.— Received and offer accepted. REPORTS. From Treasurer, reporting receipts £177 10s (id, payments £230 Is 3d, debit j balance £254 12s id.-—Received. ; From J. Jarman (Manager of Abat- j toil s) reporting for period ending 30th . April, there were examined 20 cows, 78 j bullocks, 299 sheep, 52 lambs, 15 pigs, j 1 call. Condemned 2 cows. Fees for j period £72 14s 6d.—Received. _ j Accounts amounting to £312 15s id; were passed for payment. i Mr Blank moved that Mr Coulson he j appointed Deputy Mayor.—Seconded by j Mr McGregor. Mr Coulson moved that j Mr Lloyd be appointed. Mr Lloyd | thought Mr Coulson should continue to j act and after discussion this was agreed 1 to and Mr Coulson was appointed. COMMITTEES. On the motion for appointment of a Finance Committee of the whole Council, h\ Mr Blank, seconded by Mr King, Mr Lloyd moved an amendment that the Finance Committee consist of Messrs Coulson (chair), King, Pilkington and Lloyd. He said lie thought a small committee was more workable.—. Seconded by Mr Coulson who was in favor of a smaller committee, Mr Blank favored a committee of the whole 1 an tunny matters could be discussed that
