The following cablegram has been despatched by the Alliance of Labour to Mr J. R. Clynes, M.P. : —

1 “Cable advice has been received here t that the High Commissioner in London 1 is endeavouring to send 1000 ex-service men to New Zealand, assuring them of ’ house accommodation and employment. - The Alliance of Labour, representing; : tlie rnilwavnien, seamen, waterside workers, tramwavmen, drivers, miners, metal and freezing workers, assure you the Government bore are dismissing men aild replacing them by immigrants. Unemployment is general, and threatens to become acute. Although pressed, the Government cannot find house accommodation for their own employees. Intending immigrants should he warned of the position here to prevent disappointment and distress.—Mack, President.” MOTOR ACCIDENT. HAWERA, May 4 A serious motor accident occurred on the Normanby road last evening, when Messrs Pickering and Stevens, and their wives, witlr three children, were coming to Hawera. A cow suddenly appeared on the roadside. Pickering swerved the car, hut the animal leaped, resulting in a collision, the occupants being thrown out. Mesdames Pickering and Stevens received the worst injuries, and were taken to the Hospital. The others had only minor injuries. CENSUS RETURNS. The statements published that ■ the Government will despatch about 100 unemployed, including returned soldiers to Himitangi, on the west coast, for planting trees on the sand dune area, is completely contradicted by the Act. Premier, Sir F. Bell. He said the Government had no intention to establish any employment camps. It was not intended <r > employ any great number of men on forestry. P"’ It" works, lu- said, would come first. As regards the general position of unemployment, Sir F. Bell declared there was nothing abnormal anywhere. He referred to the cable sent by *tUo Alliance of Labour to warn English immigrants. A stropg district Executive Council of the National Progressive and Moderate Labour Party was formed here last night under the presidency of Mayor Douglas. At a meeting subsequently held the constitution and platform of the party was unanimously approved and plans for further activities arranged.
