An influential section of Commoners are trying to resuscitate a conference of miners and owners on a basis that the question of a national pool be temporarily dropped, and a temporary basis of wages be settled, leaving the larger issues until the industry is again in a profit-making position.

It is announced that it will cost 22 jnillioiis to repair the damage already done by flooding. Nevertheless the Welsh miners are showing increased hostility towards the safety of the men. A procession of a thousand strikers visited the homes of the safety men today in Upper Rhondda and tried to persuade the safety men to leave work.

CUTTING DOWN POWER SUPPLIES.

Owing to the coal shortage, Government is prohibitng lighting by gas or electricity in towns of less than, five thousand inhabitants, except so far as is necessary for police requirements. In the larger towns lighting must ha reduced to twenty-five per cent of the normal, and power for tramways reduced by twenty-five per cent. Government have also prohibted a further, supply of coal to breweries.

THE ALLIES ULTIMATUM. (Received This Day at 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 5. The Allies ultimatum, in addition to calling upon Germany to execute the Reparation Commission’s demands requests immediate military naval and aerial disarmament as notified by the Powers on 29th January, with which so far Germany has failed to comply; also the immediate trial of war prisoners. The occupation of Ruhr and all other military and naval sanctions will continue during Germany’s 11011-fulfil-ment of the demands.
