AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. CHALLENGE FOR ARNST. BLENHEIM, May 2 Arnst received on Saturday a challenge on behalf of Darcy Hadfield, in the event of his defeating Hannan, to row on tho Wanganui. Arnst replied, ‘‘Yes, is sufficient inducement is offered.”
Wanganui further wired stating the challenge was being forwarded. Interviewed, Arnst says the race is still to be won or lost. He likes Wairau water and wiU stick to it if he wins, if the gate is satisfactory. PADDON WINS FROM McDEVITT. SYDNEY, -way 1. In the sculling race, Paddon and McDovitt got away on oven, terms. They sculled practically together until the three-quarters of a mile point was reached. McDevitt rowed a fast stroke, but Paddon’s was ,a long sweeping stroke. It now began t-o tell and at the mile ho led by a length. After that the race was all Paddon’s. He never seemed to vary his stroke much, whereas McDevitt raced off at his usual -ate. Three-quarters of a mile from home, Paddon was leading by five lengths. McDevitt then livened up. He made a determined attack. This ho continued up till the finish, whim he was beaten by four lengths. The time was 19min 40secs.
