The ball at Throe Mile in aid of the hall funds on Thursday evening attracted a very large attendance, and proved very successful. The 'town Hand attended and played a number oi selections, Mr Lawn supplying the music for the dance. The. ladies committee bad made very complete arrangements. The death of Mrs Ann Hodgson of Ross which took place terday removes an old and respected resident of the southern township. The deceased was a native of Durham, England and 7t years of age. She had been an invalid for past 5 years and was a very patient sufferer and her end was not unexpected. Mrs Hodgson was of a very generous disposition and was highly esteemed by all with whom she came in contact. Sli was a hard worker in the early stages of the late war and assited considerably in the collection of war funds and in knitting socks etc. Her husband predeceased her by U years. There is a family of 11, 0 daughters and 5 sons left to mourn their loss. Another son, George was killed ill the late war. The funeral takes plaee to-morrow at I .■ K) p.m. to Ross Cemetery,

Resultant of Mr R. Wild’s recent visit to the North island, there are hopes of a steamer suitable for the southern trade being available in a comparatively short time. Negotiations have been opened on the matter, and if the issue appears favorable no time will he lost in bringing the question to a head.
