During the hearing of a sly-grog case at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court .Mr A. B. Sievwright, an ex-captain in P'e New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who was appearing for the accused, strongly commented on the fact that a returned soldiers’ badge was worn by
the investigating constable when obj tabling liquor. Counsel objected to the badge being desecrated in this why by the police force. The Magistrate (Mr ! Inulnle) agreed that the use of the badge in the circumstances was unfortunate.

A married woman, Fanny Rachel Hughes, appeared at the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court, before Mr V. G. Day, 5.. M., on a charge of stealing a white silk dress and a child's silk jumper, of a total value of 1(5, the property of Jessie Morgan, a second-hand dealer. Chief-Detective Mcllveney stated that accused purchased a pair of shoes at complaintant’s shop, and stoic the articles mentioned at the same i ime. Sh c was the mother of five children, the eldest fifteen years and the youngest 16 months old. Accused had promised to repay the value of the stolen articles. The Magistrate said that it was very hard to punish the mother of a young family. Accused would he admitted to probation for twelve months.

The Wellington Zoo is shortly to have a baby elephant. Two years ago it was decided that an elephant would he a great acquisition to the Zoo, principally because it might be ridden by the children. An elephant was ordered from the Sydney Zoo, hut for various reasons, chiefly shipping troubles, the animal is still in Sydney awaiting a convenient occasion for shipment. The elephant is to cost the city £350. One of the delights of the Wellington Zoo is a baby lemur —a species of monkey whose native country is .Madagascar—the first one bred in Wellington, aiTd probably in New Zealand. Mr J. Laugridge, the curator, states that the lemur is liecoming very scarce in the animal matkets of the world, and Wellington is fortunate in having seven.
Dalgety and Co., Ltd., offered at Preston Yards last Saturday, 61 head of dairy cattle from Canterbury and 24 head of local cattle. Buyers were present from all parts of tl it Coast, and consequently competition was animated throughout the course of the sale. At Addington stock sales on Wednesday the fat pig sale was about the same as last week, except that there was an over-supply of porkers. Prices for these accordingly declined by about Id to lid per lh at the end of the sale.
