HOKITIKA BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY

TUESDAY, APRIL 2lTth. The monthly meeting of the Society was held at the Town Hall at 7.35 o’clock. Present: Hon. H. L. Michel, M.L.C. (President) in the chair; Miss Thompson, Mrs Bennett, Messrs 6. Davidson, Trvino, Preston, Perham, Wi 1 Carter, Boyd, Evans, Richards, Pilkington and Niven (lion, sec.) Correspondence received included a letter from the Hokitika Borough Council stating that the matter of abating the nuisance caused bv depositing debrir on the sea beach was under consideration as to the legality of the steps suggested by the Society. The Caledonian Society v-plied offering to. organise a, popular concert at the Town Hall on June 1 in aid of the funds. —Received with thanks. The Kilties and Mnnicpal Bands and Mrs Withers on behalf of McLean * orchestra notified willingness to assist a the open air concert. After discussion it was resolved to fix the date for Saturday, May 7, and to ask the business people through the Mayor to close their premises early. It was resolved to add some novelty items to the programme of entertainment, and the Eire Brigade was asked to co-operate. The opinion was expressed the gathering would he made a very attractive one.

It was resolved to arrange for a picture entertainment in July as a means to further augment the funds for improving Cass Square. The Hon. Michel took the opportunity of thanking members for elec,:President, during his absence. Tie had read the reports of the earlier meetings of the Society with much interest. He was anxious to do all he could to cooperate with them in assisting to beautify the town. In many to vns in New. Sc.-retarv reported that the Reserves Committee could not secure the Borough staff at presnt, and Mr Wild moved the Oounbers of the Society on the new Reserves eil he asked to loan the grader, and the Society arrange for a man to take charge with a view, of cleaning up the paths. This was agreed to The question of removing the fence in the centre of the ground was discussed also, and it was resolved with regard to works generally on the Square, that the Council he asked under the powers of the Corporations Act to include some members of the Society on the new Reserves Committee.

In connection with Gass Square, it was stated that a project was afoot to erect a band rotunda on the grounds the idea being generally approved by those present. It was resolved to offer a prize of one guinea, for a suitable design for an ornamental membership card which could he exhibited as an advertisement of the work and object the Society had before it.

Draft rules were submitted and considered at some length, and various amendments were made. The minimum adult subscription was fixed at 5/- per annum Air Pilkington wn appointed lion, solicitor, and asked to report as to the registration of the Society under the Unclassified Societies Act,

A working bee was suggested in connection with the proposed i loaning up of Cass Square, and offers of help were made in the room.
