FOR ERECTION IN FRANCE. CABINET'S APPROVED PLAN. [I)Y TEI.EGRAPH—-PER I’KESS association] WELLINGTON, April 27 Cabinet lias approved of the design of Air S. Hurst Seager for a battle exploits memorial to he erected at Longueval in France. The site chosen for the erection of the memorial was recently visited hv Sir James Allen. It is an elevated point know'n as “Lehaut He La Justice,” and the ground necessary tor the erection of the memorial has been presented to New. Zealand by the local authorities.
In recognition of this gilt, the Government of New Zealand, on the recommendation of Sir James Allen, has presented a tractor and plough to the commune, to assist in the work of restoring the devastated area. The site is at a point where three roads meet, one going towards Courcelett, one towards Longueval, and one to Flora. A circular space of 120 metres in diameter will be prepared for thememorial which is to he in the foim of a graceful obelisk, erected in white limestone. It will be 25 feet high and be readily observable from the surrounding villages, on a curved base. On the obelisk will be panels, one of which will hear the inscription “Erected to commemorate the battle of I leis, in which the New Zealanders and their comrades in arms achieved a. noble victory.” . . , Round the obelisk it is proposed hedges and trees and New Zealand flora will he planted. The design for the memorial lias been warmly approved hv the Mayor and Councillors of Flers.
