SCHOOL WARMEMORIAL

MEETING IN TOWN HALL. There was only a moderate attendance at the town Hall last evening at the' public meeting called to arrange for the erection of a memorial to the old boys* of Hokitika State School, who had served in the great war. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) occupied the chair, and briefly stated the object of flic meeting inviting suggestions, stating that the School Committee had received a number of sketches of proposed memorials, one that had been favourably considered being estimated to cost over fj.300. Mr J. King moved that the proposal to erect a memorial be approved and that arrangements be made to collect funds for the purpose. — Seconded by Mr J. Lloyd. Mr Evans suggested that a good committee be appointed with a knowledge of old scholars, such members could help to get into touch with old scholars who would be able to get outside subscriptions and also take the necessary local action. He suggested that the closing of lists be fixedT for three months hence, about peace day in July. The motion was then agreed to. Mr Lloyd then moved that the Committee consist of Messrs Shannon, King, Stevenson, Mayor, County Chairman, D. J. Evans, Irvine, Niven, Misses Ward, Laycock and Wilson. Tt was resolved to ask Miss Wilson and Messrs Seebeck and G. Maunder to act as joint secretaries. A discussion took place as to the form of memorial and decision thereon was deferred to a later meeting. The question of site was also discussed, and the favoured position was near the entrance to the school grounds facing Hampden Street. It. was suggested and met with general approval that the whole of the names of those scholars who served in the war (some 175 to ISO) lie engraved on the memorial. After some further discussion the meeting terminated with a vote oT thanks to the Mayor for presiding. Subsequently the Committee met and decided to draw up an appeal circular. This will be dealt with at a further meeting to be held at the Education Office next .Monday, at 7.1)0 p.in. The meeting then terminated
