On Saturday next, 30th April, at Kern Flat, four miles from Reetton, Messrs McMahon and Lee will sell by auction Old sheep including fat sheep, breeding ewes, lambs and Romney rams. A motor car wil leave Reel ton at 11 a.m. on the morning of the sale.
The Westland district equipped and despatched 100 men to the Boer Mar. The roll of honor of Westland men who fell in the Great War numbers alone almost ISO. The percentage of casualties in the latter war was much higher t’.inii in the South African campaign.
Yesterday afternoon a party of Returned Soldiers, to the number of 30, marched to the local cemetery and placed sprigs of rosemary on the graves of Lt. Col. Spencer, Sergt-Major T. Atkins, Privates K. P. Hatch, and 'l'. Winchester. Nurses Davies and Dixon, and Mrs 1). ,). Evans and -Mrs W. Connors. It was a very line expression of true comradeship.
St Mary’s Club are commencing theii weekly euchre tournament and dance to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, April 27th. A strong committee has been formed and everything promises well for a successful season. Good prizes have boon kindly donated. Admission Is.— Advt.
The residents of Wataroa district are petitioning the Postal authorities to alter the southern moil service so that it may run in future from Ross to Matainui in one day, instead of from Hokitika to Hari Mari. If this could be arranged Wataroa district would continue to receive two mails per week, instead of one only as will lie reverted to ■•shortly under the winter service of one mail per week only below Hari Hari. A petition on these lines, numerously signed by the residents of Matainui is being forwarded to the postal authorities.

At Hokitika, there are fourteen candidates for nine seats on the Council; at Ross, there are two candidates for the Mayoral chair, and ten candidates for nine seats on the Council ; at Kuinara, there is a contest for the Mayoralty (two candidates) and also for the Council (13 candidates for nine seats); at Greyniouth, there are a Mayoral (two candidates) and Council (eighteen candidates for nine seats) contests. The collection taken up on Cass Square yesterday forenoon realised £l/ 7s llid. There were 207 coins, including five ten shilling notes, in the collection. The collection taken up at All Saints' Church amounted to £7 15s and is being handed to Westland Mar Memorial fund. The total for the day will thus exceed £25.
