j MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. j . TO THE ELECTORS. e ' LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, j AFTER having served you as a re- | presentative in the Hokitika Bor- I ough Council for the last fourteen j years I am again offeiring you my ser- j vices. In the past I have always done ' my best to represent you faithfully and cast my vote conscientiously in your interests. ! During the war period a. “marktime” policy in the Council was war- ! ranted, but I feel that the incoming : Council is embarking on an era or prosperity for Hokitika and district. With j the rapid advancsment of the dairying ■ timber and other industries, the revival j of gold mining, and the near approach i of completion of the Otira tunnel and the linking up of the Coast with the i main arteries of the Dominion, a very bright future lies before this town, and I warrants a more progressive policy be- ! ing adopted by the Council. I can con- | fidently say that the Council has expended the revenue at its disposal judiciously, but anything in the way of extensive public works and improvement to the town generally cannot be done } out of ordinary revenue, and can only , be done by the sanction of the ratepayers to a public works loan. The water-works, one of the greatest assets the town possesses, requires careful overhauling to ascertain the cause of the shortage of the supply and when that cause is ascertained, the first and most important work for the Council is to correct it. Some of our street's are getting very much out of repair for want of funds on the part of the Council and with the prospects of better times ahead it behoves the Council to make the town as attractive as possible and I am in favour of placing a proposal before you for a. public works loan. There are many matters which I would like to touch on but space here will not permit me. In conclusion let me say that I know that an organised attempt is being made by a certain few to injure my candidature and that by mis-statements and subterfuge have endeavoured to turn against me a section of the community for whom I have the profoundest respect and who T have always done my best to help in every way and shall continue to do. I refer to the Returned Soldiers —and I would ask the Returned Soldiers not to be led to believe that I have done or would do anything in anyway detrimental to them. If elected I will allways do njy best to further the best interests of the town and 1 solicit your vote and interest on polling day. Yours faithfully, H. M. COTJLSON.
