HUMAN TOUCH IN INDUSTRY.

. j HUMAN TOUCH IN INDUSTRY. LONDON, March 3. i The Duke of York, speaking at the I Industrial Welfare League (whose obI jects are not to produce goods, but to j make men and women, and to promote fellowship in the midst of toil and hapI piness in industry), said: j The spirit of the Industrial Welfare j Society in'reality is nothing newj.it | is merely part of a great attempt to j aid the renaissance of that spirit of j industrial comradeship which has taken hold of the minds of masters and men j| in this country, and among the nations J in general!, and gradually to replace tho ! old feeling which existed many years \ ago, whereby any man, whether high J up in the grade of labour or a mere j novice, was regarded as a human factor j in the business organisation. The signs !of the times are encouraging for our | movement. There is an increased sense ! of a general responsibility for the welj fare of mankind, which is a happy legacy of the war; false judgments are being corrected and new ideals are ! being formed; many opinions are alter- ! ing and many circumstances are chnng--1 ing. Everywhere men of all stations J and all occupations are found convincI ed, some of them for the first time, I that this question of the human factor, i in industry must lie dealt with in a i new spirit, with a new purpose, and I with unaccustomed thoroughness, if we are to set straight some of the difficul--1 ties that beset our country to-day. It exists for the purpose of focussing and developing the many activities, industrial, educational and recreational indicated by the word “Welfare.” We must not he discouraged by apparently small results. We are trying to frame a social policy for the next generation and we are building a national social machinery for the future.. (Cheers.)
