THE GUYRA MYSTERY
In connexion with the cable messages relating to mysterious happenings at a house in Giiyra, New South Wales, Mr A. Feldwick writes to the Wellington “Post” : Guyra, in New England, New South Wales, is a small place, situate about 323 miles to the north of Sydney, on the Sydney to Brisbane railway line. It has had excitement in many ways. At one time it had a lake called Nincooln, situate on the top of high, hilly land, and here a “bunyip”—that mysterious creation of the Australian black was credited to live. This lake, on which a small steamer used to ply, is now dry, and stock browse over the area. Guyra had a mysterious stonethrowing episode somewhere between 1890-95. Then it had its sensational bank-shooting tragedy. The inmates of the bank premises comprised the manager, his wife, and wife’s sister. Someone thought burglars were on the premises, and the manager went to investigate, and his sister-in-lay started to look round from another direction, and the manager, seeing someone approaching, challenged and, getting no response. fired, killing his sister-in-law. This same bank manager, at the tm j of the Coolgardie gold rush, equipped 1 two brothers with cash, etc., for prosI pecting purposes, a signed condition being that if anything was struck he was to get a half share. The sequel came in a payable gold being found, and a son wrote to the father about their find, and, in the letter, urged his father not to show the contents to the bank manager; but the old man, being no scholar, took the letter to i the manager to read for him, and when I the letter came to the vital part about the gold strike, he skipped it, and, keeping possession of the original letter, gave the old man a “duplicate.” Tie used the original letter later in a law action, and won his case.
