Norton Palmer Pimental, managing director of tho Federated Films, Ltd., has been arrested on a charge oi maliciously setting fire to Nuinaii’s Buildings with intent to defraud. A message on Thursday said;- A fire in the premises of Federated Feature Films, Limited, in Numan’s Buildings, in tho city, caused damage estimated at £2O,(XX). Miss G. Reilly, who was employed in the building, after telephoning her employer that the workrooms were nlazc, was overcome by the smoko and heat, and was burned to death. A REPORT REPUDIATED. (Received This Day at 11.30 a.in.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr Hughes is indignant at the report that he proposed donating £15,000 to Bendigo. The statement eminated from the Mayor of Bendigo who received an unsigned communication purporting to come from Mr Hughes. The Mayor convened a meeting to decide the allocation of tho money. Mr Hughes stated the matter was referred to the police. He knew nothing about it. Evidently it had been the work of some person, for personal or political reasons. If true, it would he one ol the most shameful attempts to bribe in the constitutional history of Australia.
