french DETERMINATION. j TO ENFORCE PAYMENT. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION, j BERLIN, April 18. j The reparations question is now a j prominent one in Germany. In Berlin | the overshadowing subject of discussion is the threatened French military advance if the £000,000,000 which is due o-n May Ist by Germany to the Allies, is not paid, or if some acceptable proposals are not submitted by Germany. The German newspapers regard the next fortnight as being the most fateful time for Germany since the armistice. It is understood that Germany’s new proposals include an offer to assume the responsibility for the Allied debts to America, and also the payment of a substantial cash sum to be raised by an international loan, and llso for Allied participation in Germany’s industry. PARIS, April 18. The Germans ar e fervently clutching at any expedient to prevent the occupation by the Allies of the Ruhr basin. It is now asserted the Germans asked the Vatican to approach th e United States, and ask the latter to act as mediator between the Allies and Germany.
NEED FOR PRESSURE. (Received This Day at 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, April 18. Hon Lloyd George, in the Commons, announced that Germany was still in default and showed no inclination to furnish practical proposals to carry out the Treaty. It is imperative, that the Allies should confer in regard to the necessary steps to carry out the Treaty.
