ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH

The annual meeting of parishioners took place on, Friday evening in All Saints schoolroom, the Vicar, llev Ur Holloway presiding over a good attendance of parishioners. The annual balance sheet showed a credit balance for the year of £5. The new church fund now stands at £I2BO cash, which is earning interest. Promises were being faithfully redeemed, and it is confidently anticipated that before the close of the next year the fund will reach £IBOO. The Vicar tendered his thanks to the various church workers during the year, especially mentioning Mr J. B. Ward, the energetic secretary and lay reader. A feature of the meeting was the reading of a very interesting letter received that morning from the Ven. Archdeacon Harper (London), who was the fiist Vicar of Hokitika, from 1866 to 1876. Accompanying the letter was a donation for some worthy object. On the motion of the Hon H. L. Michel it was resolved that the meeting convey their greetings to the much-beloved Archdeacon, and that the new church contain some memorial of him. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr Ward and other church workers, and the former Committee (Hon H. L. Michel, W. U. Mackay, A. Keller, E. Wethey, H. Hansford, H. Peart, R. S. Galbraith, J. Jarman, W. E. Richards, J. B. Ward, Stuart, H. Sweney), with the addition of Mr J. W. Morris was reelected. Ur Holloway referred eulogistically to the splendid work being done by the establishment of St Agnes’ Girls’ Hostel, and the devotion of the Sisters in their parish work. Before closing the Hon PI. L. Michel referred to the approaching departure of Ur Holloway, and the faithful work lie had done in the parish during a most strenuous term. The hard work accounts to a

large extent for Dr Holloway’s breakdown in health. His departure would be greatly regretted. He moved that a vote of hanks be recorded on the minutes to Dr Holloway. Hr Mackay seconded the resolution, and supplemented Mr Michel’s remarks. Dr Holloway, in thanking the speakers, said he regretted leaving Hokitika, for lie had spent some of the happiest days of his life here, despite the strenuous times. He was very thankful that the Rev Mr Purchas had been appointed his succecssor, and asked the parishioners to tender him their fullest assistance. Mr Ward extended a lie--welcome to the new Vicar, Rev Mr Purchas, who briefly returned thanks The meeting then closed.
