In .Saturday's issue there was some candid • criticism of our town from the able pen of Dr Platts-Mills, a wellknown enthusiast i,n town planning. The criticism was in quite a friendly spirit, and we hope has aroused the citizens generally to a sense of what they owe their town, if they would see it prosper. In the United*States there is now a great centre known as Seattle which is not as old established as Hokitika by any means. But Seattle is a great flourishing industrial and shipping centre mainly by reason of the “Seattle Spirit.” The people were selfreliant, and by their own united concentrated efforts have forced the place to the undoubted eminence it now stands at. Wo would like to see a kindred spirit inflamed among the citizens of this town. Dr Platts-Mills writes of many simple mentis by which small achievements with effective results can he brought {tbout.
