At a meeting to-night the Executive of the Westport branch of the A.S.R.S. a resolution was passed expressing indignation at the treatment received by Mr Mcllvride in the Railway Department’s refusal to grant him leave to contest the Pa tea seat and in subsequently dismissing him, -as being’ contrary to Mr Massey’s promise in Parliament that the railwaymen had full civil and political rights. The resolution urged the A.S.R.S. Executive to use every possible means to have the embargo immediately removed. YOUNG MAN DROWNED. THAMES, April 12. WELLINGTON, April 13 The Council of the Academy of Fine Arts, passed a resolution which will he sent to Government and Taranaki local bodies protesting against the destruction of Puritutu which, from its historical interest and great natural beauty, should Ik* regarded as the pro- . perty of the Dominion. Its destruction will be an act of vandalism comparable to Reims Cathedral. BIG-THEFT OF DI AMONDS. WELLINGTON, April 12. Mr H. Baron, a dealer in precious stones, of Sydney, who lias been travelling in the Dominion with jewellery, had £2OOO worth of diamonds, opals, and pearls stolen from his bed-room in a hotel to-day. The thieves gained admission, and cutting a hole in a bag, stole the jewels In their hurry they overlooked others. The police have a small clue at present. They believe Baron had been shadowed. Agreeing with Council for defendants the Magistrate, Mr Hunt, said that he did not think the case was one for a conviction,- He dismissed the information. R.S.A. DUNEDIN, April 13. The Returned Soldiers’ Association executive decided to ask the conference to consider the advisability of removing the Association’s headquarters from Wellington; also to request Government to instruct picture theatres to close on Anzac Day.
