A fiOlb fish, captured, by Mr (; ■ Kenny at Okukuri sonic (lays ago, has caused considerable discussion among Sounds fishermen and others, as it is believed to be the first of its kind seen in local waters. In appearance it somewhat resembles a trout, but (says the Picton “Press”) it is. of course, much too large to be associated with anything of that variety. The fish was forwarded t<» Air H. Rhind, who bad it placed in the freezing chamber at the Picton Works, and his written to the Inspector of Fisheries, asking if he will take steps to have the fish ‘identified.
A Government land valuer, says the “Manawatu Times.” in giving evidence in the Compensation Court at Masterton. stated that he valued the land in dispute at C 65 per acre. For the purposes of Government valuation, howover, he said he would value it at from £45 to €SO per acre. “Why do you make the difference in values?” asked Mr Justice Salmond. “Because the Government values are based upon the return from the land over a period of rears, while persons who buy land irequently pay a price based on the in-terest-yielding returns of a year or two.’ 1 Mr Justice Salmond : “Oh, that is it.”

In its current number the, "N.Z. , Trade Review,” alter referring to the import figured, says:—“During the coming quarter we expect to see considerable improvement in these figures, as importation is being severely curtailed, while exports will increase as long as there is enough shipping available for their removal. There are he avv stocks ol wool, meat, and cheese awaiting removal. The markets for our main products are not very favourable at present and reduced returns must he expected. It will take some time for matters to right themselves, and while we are experiencing a period of financial tightness and quietness in trade, wo think it will not be very long before some improvement will he noticeable, and conditions will steadily return to normad. Owing to the present state ot affairs the Government recently extended the moratorium to apply to money on deposit at call. This was no doubt merely a temporary expedient to prevent embarrassment in some quarters, ami will probably not be made use of except where absolutely necessary, and it should not he required for very long.” y A most interesting demonstration was given in Fit/dicrbort street last (‘veiling before the Chairman and members of tho Westland County Council. One of the big motor lorries sent down j the Coast by .Messrs Inglis Bros, of ! Wellington, to demonstrate the possi- | bilities of these machines, was loaded up with a little over 3 yards ot beach gravel weighing lj tons., I his load u ;, s lifted up by the hydraulic rams operated by ’ the driver, who can raise j ::nd lower the load carrying body of the j truck without leaving his seat. The truck was then driven forward, the taij gate released and inside of 12 seconds the load was beautifully and evenly spread. The load was spread 23 yards long, and 7 feet wide with an average depth of 2J inches. The demonstration should certainly illustrate to the Councillors and public the immediate necessity for adoption of the recommendation jnade by Air Evans, the County Treasurer, in his report published in
yesterday’s issue. The monthly abstract ot statistics for Alarcli shows that there has been a slight decline in the cost of living. The index number for the three food groups as at February loth. (Dominion weighted average) is shown as 1873, a decrease of 33 points as compared with the preceding month’s figures (1906). and an increase of 75.05 nor cent as compared with that for July, 1914. A
decrease of 58 points in' the groceries group as compared with January is principally accounted lor by a fall in price (practically throughout the Dominion) of potatoes, tea. soap, and tinned fruits. In the dairy produce "roup there has been a considerable increase -in the price of eggs. hut this has beci discounted to a considerable extent by lower prices ruling for ham and bacon; tin 1 net result is an increase of 17 points for the "roup. In the meat group the decrease of 88 points is due to a universal fall in the price of a ll cuts. The percentage increase over July, I<)M, for the three food groups in the Doited Kingdom (as at March Ist) is I I!). The purchasing power ot the sovereign for the three food groups in the quarter ended December. Ib2(), was lls 3d, whereas for the corresponding quarter of the previous year it was 18s 1 Id
