AI ill nor, resigning position as nightwatchninn. owing to hav | mg been appointed Borough Overseer and thanking Board for past consideration. —Received; Mr Coulson moved the resignation be accepted with regret and that the Board express its appreciation of the very capable services, rendered by Air Afillner during the three years he had so satisfactorily filled the position. Seconded bv Air Wilson, supported by Aressr:; Breeze, and AlcGregor and carried. From T. Hugo, Inspector of Fire Brigades, Wellington, stating an inspection of the Hokitika Fire Brigade and its equipment was made on the 16th. inst., when at the inspection muster, I there were present the Superintendent, Deputy and 19 Firemen. The steam fire engine was got to work, but owing to a faulty connection the deliveries were not as efficient as usual. A r arioiis drills with the hose reel were also carried out. The plant and equipment was found to be in its usual good order and condition. Now that the electric lighting is.installed in the town, the Brigade should be provided with a couple of pairs of rubber gloves and one pair of insulated pliers.— Received; It was resolved to at once obtain gloves and pliers recommended. The Secretary stated that a faulty leather washer in the stand pipe had been replaced immediately after the inspection. REPORTS. The Secretary reported receipts £l‘29 19s. 2d.; Payments £167/17/3, credit balance £93/19/4. —R ece i ved. The Secretary reported thKt Nightwatchman ATillnor’s telltale clock record for the period was clear, and that there had been four discrepancies by temporary watchmen since.—Received. Accounts amounting to £96/7/6 were passed for payment. NIGHT W A TCHMAN. Before applications were dealt with Mr Breeze raised the- question as to the necessity of a nightwatehman, being of opinon that it was not required. The Chairman said he was personally opposed to doing away with the nightwatchman. It was agreed to leave over discussion and that applications be dealt with. The following applications were received : —David Little, F. Saxon, AY. Holiev, S. AA T . Ridlands, and E. A\ r . Heenan. The names were reduced to three— Saxon and;Heenan 4,, Ridlatul|3, Holley. 1., . Reduced to two—Ridlands agid Ilpenap 3, Saxon 2. Reduced to one— Ridlands and Heenan 2 each. A draw, in.;/he hat resulted in fife.name of Heenan coining out, and Air E. AV. Heenan was then appointed to the position. The Board rose at 0.10 p.m.
