■' VARIOUS DOMINION ITEMS. [BY TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION'] JOCKEY MANSON APPEALS. CHRISTCHURCH, April IT. At the Racing Conference an appeal was made by L. 51. slanson, a jockey, against his disqualification by the Stratford Racing Club, of six months I for incompetent horsemanship in riding Walton in the Lowgarth Welter Handicap at the Stratford meeting in January. It was decided that under the rules there was no power to inflict disqualification for incompetent horsemanship, although the circumstances might warrant suspension. The judges came to the conclusion that justice would he met by suspending Manson from riding for three months from February Bth.
FORGERY ADMITTED. AUCKLAND, April 12. At the Police Court, Robert Harvey Campbell, admitted forgery and uttoring of a cheque for £284 16s. The accused worked in the office of F and W. Fowler, plumbers. He opened an account at the Bank of New South Wales under an assumed name and paid in a cheque signed F and W. Fowler. Through his cheque book he presented a cheque for the withdrawal of £IBO. The delay in getting the cheque certified to alarmed Campbeii, who disappeared. Enquiries showed Fowler’s cheque was a forgery. Accused was allowed out on bail of £IOO. A FIRE. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 12. A fire occurred at 8 o’clock last night in tlia premises of West and Sons, painters and paperhangers. Owing to the flames having a good hold before being discovered, and the inflammable nature of the stock, the fire was not suppressed before the building was gutted and practically a total loss. Insurances on building £6OO, on stock £1,200. The loss above insurance is estimated at from £I,OOO to £1,500.
SHUNTER CRUSHED. ASHBURTON, April 12. Michael O’Brien, a railway shunter, had his head crushed between two trucks this morning and sustained a fractured skull. His condition is critical. MASQUERADOR FINED. AUCKLAND, April 12. Claude Osmondc Barker, who masqueraded as a clergyman was to-day fined £SO and costs with tln> alternative of three months imprisonment tor having in his possession a firearm (loaded revolver) without lawful purpose. J. Boynton, S.M., said carrying firearms was a grave menace to the community.
