Mr Thomas reports that the transporters and railwaymen’s rtepresentatives reached an agreement at Downing Street which had removed the question of the pumpmen. PUMP MEN RESUMING. \ LONDON, April 11. In consequence of the Miners’ Fechgf eration’s decision to resume pumping, the pumpmen in most of the areas have now resumed work. They are to be paid the old rates. They are not waiting for volunteers to replace them.
The South Wales field has been sav ed in the nick of time.
The actual floodings are: Twenty pits in Scotland : 18 pits in England, and in Wales only three. THOMAS’S VIEWS. LONDON, April - The Railwaymen’s Secretary, Mr Thomas M.P., in speaking to the railwaymen and transporters said that their representatively whjen in conference with Mr Lloyd George had pointed out that it would be a crime if a great strike occurred because at first the parties could not be brought together. He added that the deputation left Downing Street after having succeed-« ed in arriving at an agreement wb : removed the question regarding the pumpmen. He thought the Government were entirely right in their determination to protect the mines. ' COST OF STRIKE. LONDON, April 10 It is estimated that the strike is costing 15J million pounds per week. Th : however, includes three and a quarter millions spent on defence measures.
READY TO STRIKE. (Received This Day at 10.35 a.m.) LONDON, April 11. Thomas and Cramp telegraphed to the Northumberland railwaymen that they must strike on Tuesday unless negotiations result in a settlement. USING DIRECT ACTION. (Received This Day at 10.40 a.rti.) LONDON, April 11. West Fife strikers last night applied direct action, drawing the fires, to prevent pumping Blackball Colliery. The police arrived too late, but they will prevent damage to machinery.
