The sentencing of Edwin Scott, Pritchard, a letter carrier,, to'twelve months reformative detention for theft of money from letters, Justice Herdmnn stated the public confidence must be maintained ip public departments, and he would not give probation to any postal official in similar circumstances. A BOGUS CLERGYMAN. AUCKLAND, April 11. Claude Osmond Barker aged 28, wit : masqueraded as a clergyman at Auckland among business people just before Easter, was charged at the police court with having obtained about £ls worth of goods on valueless cheques. There are three other charges that he obtained about £3OO worth of drapery and furnishings hv false pretences and also of being in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Accused said he would formally plead not guilty, but at the Supreme Court would plead guilty. He was committed to the Supreme Court, for trial. APPEAL COURT. WELLINGTON, April 11. The Appeal Court opened its sessions to-day. The only case heard was under tho Law Practitioners Act, in re H. E. Eliott defendant, solicitor of Opotiki, who had not had his trust account audited for three years. A rule nisi ordering him to be struck of the rolls was obtained by the New Zealand Society, and lie was ordered to pay a fine of £SO. The Court now discharged the rule nisi, as Elliott had since had his accounts audited, and they were found to he correct, provided that ho paid the costs of the Law Society and the £SO fine. Provisional leave to appeal to the Privy Council was given in the case of Peter MacDonald v. Elizabeth Valentine and others, heard on September 23rd. PECULIAR CAUSE OF DEATH. DUNEDIN, April 11. Gordon Alexander Stevenson, brother of the Mayor of Ft. Chalmers, died at Mount Royal, near Palmerston yesterday from the effects of a recent motor bicycle mishap. Deceased tell off the cycle and in doing so broke a bottle of petrol in his pocket, which severed a thick artery, causing considerable Hooding. v YACHTING CHALLENGE. DUNEDIN, April 11. Replying to a challenge for the Sanders’ Memorial Cup, by the Port Nicholson Club, the Otago Yacht Motor Association has replied that the conditions of the challenge are yet unsettled. and they promise to communicate later.
