Mr Caughley, New Zealand Director of Education stated education was more liberally provided for in New Zealand than in Australia, hut he was greatly impressed with the 1 direct control of all educational agents in New South Wales, whose system was far more economical in almost every section, than New Zealand’s. The salaries

of New Zealand teachers were somewhat higher than New South Wales.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN ELECTIONS

ADELAIDE, April 11

The elections have resolved into a struggle between Liberal and labour. The otlier parties are practically wiped out. The present indictions point to Liberals having 24 seats, a gain of three, and Labour 20, a gain of three; Progressive Country Party 1, which is a loss of six; Farmers and Settlers 1, the same. F. W. Conovbeer (Speaker), was*defeated for East Torrens after holding the seat for 28 years. The Council returns show six Liberals and two Labour are leading.

' PROHIBITION CANDIDATES DEFEATED. (Received This Day at 10.85 a.m.) ADELAIDE, April 11. One feature of the elections on the present returns, is that all the prohibition candidates were defeated.
