LATE LOCALS.
The School Committee elections throughout the district take place on next Monday night, the 18th inst.
Bishop Brodie, speaking at the annual meeting of the Society lor the Protection of Women and Children at Christchurch, appealed for Alice Parkinson. She was imprisoned for life for killing the father of her child. Several efforts have been made to have her released. Bishop Brodie, who was speaking of religious influence, said, “1 have no intention to criticise the judiciary or the Prisons Board. Now i Zealand can justly he proud ol the j gentlemen engaged in that work, and I know full well the consideration they give to cases of this character; and 1 know that that poor soul has shown a disposition which does not warrant her immediate release; hut 1 am convinced that if the clergy used their influence ! with her, the one thing missing would I he supplied to bring her to a better I frame of mind.”
