The Council fnet at 8 pan. Present: Messrs CL A. Perry (Mayor), Wood, Breeze, Warren, Coulson, Blank, Parkhill.
Apologies were made for Messrs Thompson and King. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.
INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. ”
From Resident Engineer, Greymouth, in reference to drain at police station. —Received.
From Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, re issue of licenses.—Received.
From Land and Income Tax Department, asking for return of moneys on de po s i t. —Received. From Minister of Labor, Wellington, forwarding gazetted notice of Wednesday as half-holiday.-—Received. From Minister of Internal Affairs, forwarding authority for publication of balance sheet. — Received. REPORTS, From Treasurer, reporting receipts C 772 2s Hd, payments C9(i7 Is (id.—Received. _ Accounts amounting to j-449 Os od were passed for payment. From J. Jarman (Manager of Abattoirs) reporting there were examined during March—ll cows, 97 bullocks, •204 sheep, 196 lambs, 17 pigs, 8 calves. Fees for period £7l 10s fid.—Received. PROPOSED POLL. Mr Coulson asked for leave to move that an informal poll he taken at the coming municipal elections, to take an informal poll on a proposal to borrow £13,000, for permanent public works, the interest not to.exceed M per cent, and not more than £IOOO to he spent in any one year. Mr Blank seconded pro forma. Lc I-,! --I mind a loan for public works, lull he objected to a loan for beautifying the town. Mr Coulson said he favored the loan for permanent public works, such as the completion of Hall Street drain and similar works. Mr Wood said he could not support the proposal in view of the turning down of the motion at. last meeting toi water winks, which was of far more
importance. Mi Wanen look a similar view to Mr Wood. He was inclined at tin's late hour to put the proposal outlined at last meeting by Mr Mood beloic fhe Council.
Mr Breeze said Councillors knew if a loan was possible at all it should he utilised for water supply works. He suggested a £6OOO loan, considering a £3OOO would lie useless.
Mr Coulson in reply said, though he recognised tho water supply was tho most urgent work still there were urgent public works required.
Mr Perry said if money was raised it would have to lie for one purpose and one only and that was for the improvement of the. water supply. The present position of the water supply was a most difficult one and every effort should be made for the extension of the water supply. He would vote against the motion for that reason. Ho would put everything on one side to enable ever' effort, to he made to improve tho walesupply. The, motion was put and lost. The Council rose at 8.20 p.m.
