The suggestion is made that American Umbel- merchants are now attempting to dump quantities of secondgrade Oregon pine on the New Zealand ‘ market at extremely low prices. If this is allowed, it is claimed by the local millers, it will result in a return to the conditions of 1907 when the saw mi llers were unable to market the lower grade of local timber. Consequently numbers of hush workers will he thrown but of employment.
The matter was referred to Sir Francis Bell, - Forestry Minister. He said it was a matter for very grave consideration whether a duty should be placed oil imported timber to be utilised for building purposes. The matter lmd not been dealt with by the Government, however, nor had -any definite representations been made to the Government on the subject.
