Tlio Te Awamutu Railway Board has | adopted the engineer's report on the railway connection from the Main Trunk line. Te Awamutu on the main j line and Piitaruru on the Rotorua line ! are the connecting points, and the I length of the new constructions is 33 j miles. The estimated cost is £429,000. j The route generally follows the Punui . and Owairaka. Valleys to the Waikato liver, and the bridge over the river is the only engineering difficulty. The line is surveyed to conform to the present Government standard as to grades and curvature the minimum grade being 1 in 100. The railway will open the large central district, and will reduce the journey to Rotorua from the south by forty miles, with a slight saving in the mileage from Auckland. A SERIOUS EIRE. WELLINGTON. A fire last evening did considerable damage to the factory owned and occupied by Samuel Triester and Company, hat and cap manufacturers The outbreak is attributed to the fusing of an electric wire. The stock was badly damaged. SHIPPING MOVEMENTS. DUNEDIN, April 7. The steamer Navun withdraws from the Island’s service on arrival at Auckland on the 2oth., and will sail for the eastern Pacific. The Tofua takes the Navua’s running, leaving Auckland on 30th for Fiji, Samoa. Tonga. The steamer Errol arrived at Port j Chalmers with coal from Newport News I lor tin' New Zealand Government. ■ The Flora which was fixed to leave ; Auckland for the Eastern Pacific, has , been withdrawn. !
