VARIOUS DOMINION ITEMS. MOTOR PARTY’S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. UV TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT.
CHRISTCHURCH, April I
The occupants of the motor car which plunged 100 feet down a steep bank on the Aknroa road were : Forbes Blnekmore (2(5), residing at Shrewsbury Street, a traveller for Adam’s, Ltd. motor ear proprietors. He was driving the car. Bertram Edwards, of New Brighton Hotel, and a son of Mr M. Edwards, the well known trotting trainer. Norman Bing, who was on a holiday from • Wellington, where he is employed at Banks’ Commercial College. Duncan Brown, of Christchurch, architect. George Storey, the comedian of the Walter George Sunshine Players Company, now appearing at the Opera House. Mrs Storey, wife of George Storey, who is known on the stage as Duleie Milner.
The ear left the road at a fairly safe point, where there is no bend or obstruction, and it is presumed that it ran back when the driver was pulling up to look to his lights. The car crashed through a wire fence close to the road and rolled over sideways until it reached the bottom. It was so badly smashed that it will probably have to be dismantled before it can be hauled back to the road.
Yiewing the wreckage, it is now seen that the party escaped more serious injuries by a miracle. AIL the occupants were stunned and remained unconscious for some time.
Mr Storey had his leg fractured, and suffered other severe injuries, the full extent of which are yet unknown. Mr Edwards had his collar-hone broken, and Mr Blacktnore was badly cut on tlie thigh. The throe others were considerably bruised and shaken. A SUDDEN DEATH. DUNEDIN, April 5. Captain Bernech, a retired sea caplain in the Union Coy. service, died suddenly in the street: last night, aged 71 years. PATE A BY-E LECTION. ITAWERA, April 4 Mr Morrison. Liberal candidate, addressed a meeting at Wavcrloy. He contended that the Government’s land policy permitted aggregation, and criticised the Government for income tax deductions made from payments to farmers when distributing their pro)>ortion of the profits made by the Imperial Government on New Zealand wool. He predicted that there would be no surplus next year. As there would he less imports to collect Customs on and owing to the declining value of produce, farmers’ income tax would yield little. The candidate favoured a State bank, which would prevent large sums of money going to Australia through the latter’s branches in New Zealand. He discussed the attitude of extreme Labour, and said their disloyal utterances alone were siillieien 1 to lose them the support ol all but a small section. The candidate was accorded a vote ol thanks.

POLLARD’S PICTURES.
On Wednesday and Thursday evening’s Pollards are putting on two big picture attractions. On Wednesday Mon tagu Love will be featured in “A Broad way Saint” a world feature, on Thursday Bessie Bnrriscalo in “The White Lie” a I’araltn photoplay. In “A Broadway Saint” Montague Love plays the leading role. He was a nice quiet well-broken young man of simple tastes, but' he came from Broadway, and that damned him in the eyes of the villagears in the little country town. Every thing that came from New York they saw in a flare of mephistophelinn ruddy flame. So they gave the dog a had name and he had a hard time trying to live ii)) to it. He got pinched for smoking cigarettes—he got pinched for carrying hair tonic (65% alcohol) in a dry community—whatever he did ho got pinched. On Thursday Bessie Barrisealo in “The White Lie” will he Bollard’s star attraction.
