THE BUTTER PRICE

BOARD OF TRADE TAKES A HAND. BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. WELLINGTON, April 1 With reference to the Auckland telegram published to-day that the grocers * there are charging 2s 8d per lb for 3 blitter, the Board of Trade have taken s up the matter, as the margin of profit is far greater than was the case previously stated. Tlie Wellington grocers are also noti- ' tying a similar increase. ’ This is being also gone into at once, seeing that no creamery butter made ' after March 31 has yet come into con- ? sumption in the city. ' AGRICULTURAL DIRECTOR SPEAKS. I 2s 3d TO RULE AT PRESENT. 1 WELLINGTON, April 1. Tlie Director of Agrciulture states that the position created by the unduly high retail prices of butter, together with other developments has necessitated further consideration of the whole matter of butter prices. The matter has been the subject of dis- ' mission between the Government Departments concerned and those representatives of the dairy interests available in Wellington. It was thought that the matter could have been settled at once, but circumstances have arisen unexpectedly which make this impossible. It is now anticipated that further consideration between the rei presentatives of the producers, and the Departments will be necessary. This will probably mean a delay of some days before the matter can he definitely 1 settled. In the meantime, the price of butter will be ls lljd ex the factory door, and 2s 3d over the counter for cash. To enable this to he done, tlie Director says, a Government subsidy of 3d per lb will be paid on all butter sold I complying with these conditions, and for immediate sale. It is hoped a further final announcement will he made before the end of next week. m* araai
