Thoughts For The Times

Abandoning Compulsion. The Auckland “Herald" (a Reform journal) unkindly remarks anent Mr Massey’s abandonment of the compulsory lever to raise funds to purchase more land for the soldiers, that, he probably hopes that a little later the whole incident may be forgotten. In the meantime he temporises by substituting a “cat and mouse” policy for a frank abandonment of the compulsory provision. This may be very diverting to the philosophically-minded but it does not conduce to confidence in the Government or reliance upon its intention to administer and enforce the laws which it has made.
