In connection with the children’s sports at Woodstock on Tuesday, there will he a sweep stake chop and saw, with additional trophies. A final reminder is given oi the concert and hall at the Public Hall, Kanieri, on Faster Alonday night, in aid of the funds of St Joseph school. A capital programme has been arranged.
Two motor lorries fully loaded left this morning for Hari Hari races, the Town Band filling one of the vehicle*. The weather conditions were against a pleasant journey.
The weather yesterday for the holiday turned out fine and warm, and was most' pleasant. During the night heavy rain fell again and the conditions this n oming were -unfavourable for the llari Hari races, and the Mnnnniu-Rua-tapti sports at Lake Maliinapua, which were set down for to-day.
Mails received at the local Post Office ex s.s. Karamu were in a very damaged condition, caused through a pipe bursting on board. Some of the mail is in a very wet, dirty and much damaged condition.
There was a very large number of travellers overland on Thursday, there being 190 from Christchurch. As a result of the strain on the coach service*, the train was a good hour late in leaving Otira and ran correspondingly late to destination.
At Addington stock sales on Wednesday there was a small entry of tat pigs forward to tno usual demand. There was an over-supply of unfinished porkers. Values were as follow :— Choppers £3 19s to £5 12s (id, extra heavy haveners to £6, heavy baconers £5 to £5 Ills, light baconers £4 5s to £4 15s, average price per lb 7d, heavy porkers £2 15s to £3 12s (id, light porkers £2 10s to £2 17s (id, average price per lb fl.Jd. The Canterbury Education Board notifies that the annual meetings of householders throughout the district will be bold on Monday, April 18tli at 7.30 p.m. to elect school committees for the vear.
The services at All Saints' Church to-morrow have had to be slightly rearranged. There will be only one early celebration of the Holy Communion at 7 o’clock. At Riniu the service will be at 8.30 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. and at Kanieri as arranged.
The West Coast Tennis Touranament was commenced at Greymouth yesterday morning in fine weather. There were representatives of all the Coast Clubs present. Play continued throughout the day oil the two club courts. The weather to-day would prevent the tournament being continued.
The proposed match at Greymouth yesterday for the Ballinger Buckles, between two rinks from Reefton and Greymouth Clubs did not take place, the Reefton mett not coining down. A three rink Westport team was to have played the Grey club on Easter Monday for the Buckles at Greymouth, but unless the Reefton Club loses the Ruckles to either before, the game cannot take place for these trophies.
The work of extending the railway line from where it branches off at Dilnollie to the new colliery now being opened out at Point Elizabeth, is now in progress. Work at the colliery is also progressing. The bins are now nearing completion, and the levelling of an area for railway yards is now in full swing. The mouth of the new mine is only a few hundred yards from the sea shore at Point Elizabeth, about half a mile past the Ferry Hotel.
One of the special features, drawn to the attention of visitors along the Gieymoutli-Point Elizabeth road, is the scene of the double murder, for which Eggers paid the capital penalty. On the top of the rise, just alongside and overlooking the scene of the murder a neat memorial lias been erected by the residents, inscriptions thereon referring to the sad tragedy that cost two valuable lives. The monument will serve to keep in memory, a very regrettable episode, which stirred the feelings of the community with such horror when the news of the tragedy became known.
A quiet hut pretty wedding was
solemnised at 11 ol.' ’liinil,' Church. Groymoulli, on Tuesday morning, the contracting parties being Mr Frederick Benson Robson, youngest son of Mr aid Mrs Wm Robson, of Runanga, and Miss Fupliemia George, daughter of Air and Airs George, of Dillmanstown, Kumara. The bride who was given away by her brother, Air H. George, was dressed in a costume of grey, with hat to match. The bridesmaid, Aliss Nellie London (cousin of the bride) wore a navy blue costume with a pink hat. The bridegroom was attended by -Mr Leo O'Loughi'n of Runanga. The bride and bridegr em left by the Otira express on root? fo- Christchurch, where the honeymoon v. ill be spent.
The Hokitika races will take place on Wednesday. The Westland Racing Club has made the usual complete arrangements for its forthcoming autumn meeting. The course and appointments are in excellent order, and patrons will note the improvements made even since the summer meeting. The Hokitika Municipal band will provide a special programe at the races. The Club will extend its usual courtesies to the ladies and returned soldiers, who will he admitted free. The uniform charge of admission to the public to all parts of the course, will lie five shillings. The first race will start at 12.15 o’clock on Wednesday next, and with the long string of entries there should be good fields and excellent sport. I lie handicaps for the meeting are due on Monday night, and acceptances close the following night at 10 o’clock. W ith tail weather, the Club should experience a very successful meeting. A large number of visitors are expected, the Railway Depatrment having put on a very convenient time-table, serving all parts „f the Westland section, from Reefton and Otira in the north to Ross in the south. Patrons travelling by rail will he able to journey to Hokitika and home again after the races, the same day. This convenience will "« doubt he appreciated by an increased volume ol traffic.
