POPULAR PAKISHIONJOi FAREWELL®. On last Sunday evening a very large number of the Parishioners of St Alar/s Hokitika, gathered in the Club Rooms to bid farewell and make a departing presentation to one of their oldest members, Mr John Cahill, who is going to reside in AVellington. Rev. Dr Kennedy presided and ably voiced the feelings of the people at the departure of such an ardent and untiring worker as their guest. He spoke at length jti Air Cahill’s good work for many years past in th 0 Hokitika Parish. He v isaed him every success and happiness in the future expressing the general hope that he would soon come back to St. Alary’s, Hokitika,

ATessrs AV. Jeffries, F. Groufskv, .J. AVard, and G. AA T ormington all spo'-r in most praiseworthy terms of their guest’s untiring energy as a church worker and of how hard his place would be to fill. They wished him a long and happy life and assured him that his work would never be forgotten by the parishioners. Bov. Dr Kennedy on behalf of the parishioners presented Mr Cahill with a well-filled purse as a small token of a ppreciation. Art Cahill suitably responded thanking them for their kind expressions and gift, ' He had always regarded his assistance as a duty and had given it with pleasure. He hoped to soon hear of the completion and tho church and wished them every success in their efforts.

,A very pleasant function concluded with “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and Auld Lang Syne.

HIBERNIAN FAREWELL. .

A very pleasing function took place in St. Mary’s Club Room oil St. Patrick’s night when the members of the Hibernian Society assembled in strong numbers to make a farewell presentation to one of their past presidents, Mr. Cahill who is shortly leaving Hokitika to reside in AVellington. Rev. Dr Kennedy and Rev. Father Riordan were also presnt. The tables were laid with a good supply of tasty delicacies. During the evening the President (B •<>. j Pickering) spoke of the ardent "«.i----kerthey were about to lose. He spoke at length on the untiring labours « f filed guest and expressed the Jeep regret of tho lodge at'his departure. ■Appropriate speeches were made by Bev. Dr. Kennedy, Father Riordan, Bros. F. de bore, F. Groufsky, L. Dwnn and P. Kortegast. Bro. J. AVard on behalf of the lodge presented Bro. Cahill with a gold Hibernian emblem suitably inscribed as a token of remembrance and gratitude from 1 lie Robt. Emmet Branch of which he was one of the oldest members. The speaker expressed the deepest regret at tbeiguest's departure. As a church work ’r, a Club member and a Hibernian 'us place would be very hard to fill. Mr Cahill suitably and feelingly *<sponded thanking th 0 members for thenrecognition of his services—work which he always regarded as liis duty.

During the evening a large nuini>“r of toasts were proposed and responded to, musical and other items being gi.-“’i by Bros. AV. Stopforth, F Groufscy, E. Dale, Al. O’Connor, J. Pickering, P. Kortegast and J. AVard. Miss Al. Devaney ably presided at the piano and at a late hour an enjoyable function was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syim

Air Cahill left by Tuesday monv.ng s train for Christchurch en route to VVollington.
