LITTLE HOPE FOR HER SAFETY
WELLINGTON, March 20,
The shipping authorities at Lyttelton hold out little hope now for the safety of the American schooner John and Winthrop, which left Lyttelton on February 1, for Greymouth to load for Australia. She was carrying x.- tons of stone ballast.
On March sth. wreckage was sighted six-and a half miles off Waipapa Point north of Kaikoura, not far front the spot where the schooner was last sighted. (Captain Charles Petersen was in command of the schooner, which had a crew of seven.

James Pattqrson, recently charged with carrying on the business of bookmaker, aird in whose case two juries at the Supreme Court disagreed, was charged to-day at the Magistrates Court with Using a private hotel as a common gaming house and trespassing on the Hutt Racecourse on January 23rc1., lie being a prohibited person under the Gaming Act.
In lining Patterson £IOO and costs on the first charge and £2 and costs on the second, the Magistrate Air F. K. Hunt, said, said this was the last fine he was going to. impose in similar cases.

She said she watched a man in the crowd pick pockets, so she followed his example. WOMAN INJURED. WELLINGTON, March 20. .Mrs Doulter, of Xgahauranga, who was driving a horse and cart, collided with a tram-car. She was taken to the hospital in a serious condition, but is now out of danger.

A rowdy street scene* followed the arrest of an intoxicated man on Saturday night. Tli,> man stoutly resisted and the assistance of other constables had to be enlisted. The prisoner was still lighting and calling on the crowd which became threatening. The police handcuffed the man and were followed by a large crowd. The prisoner was carried to the Police station and some stones were thrown but n oonc was injured.

A fir,, occurred to-day in a block of buildings adjoining the Grand Ho tel in Willis Street. Tint Brigade quickly extinguished the blaze which was confined to the roof, but they had to pour a considerable amount of v.otor on the burning portion with the result that damge was done to the stock of E. C. Brown, mercer; Bartlett, photographers ; Haywood, dentist. 'Flic insurances which are said to he heavv are unavailable.
