The latest monthly abstract of statistics contains information up to the middle of February, and it sets the index number for the three food groups for the month of January at 1906. This represents a decrease of nine points as compared with last Deeemlrer, and an increase of 78.13 per cent over the price of these three groups in July, 1914. The decrease, states the abstract, is not so marked as had been anticipated. In the dairy produce group, the fall of 39 points is substantially the result of the decreased prices ruling for bacon aiid ham, and in the case of Hie meat group, the fall (10 points) is exclusive ly due to the price of pork.
At a large and representative meeting of farmers held at Cambridge recently, a resolution was carried unanimously, that seeing the serious loss entailed on dairy farmers, particularly in the Waikato, owing to the order ol tin* Horticultural Department to cut all hawthorn hedges, the Minister of Agriculture In* requested to visit this portion of tlu* Auckland province to meet the farmers at an early date to see for himself the serious nature of the work and thresh the matter out, and in the meantime that he he requested to stay the hands of the inspectors. The meeting had ai very strong feeling on the question, and stated that to cut hedges would mean a heavy cost and cause enormous loss. Air Young, M.R., tlu* Government orchardist and biologist, attended the meeting. The Westland Land Board at its meeting yesterday afternoon, when deal ing with ail application for an island in th ( > Grey river fronting the applicant’s land, departed from the usual course followed in the past. In doing so the Chairman stated that there were special circumstances in this case which he considered warranted the exception being made. When the applicant was given the section fronting the island now applied for, a special concession was given him, inasmuch as he was given it without competition, when the area was thrown open for selection by returned soldiers, in view of bis having been in possession of a T.G.L. Under these circumstances lie thought that it would not lie fair to take away the area from the present holder who was engaged in dairying operations, and who had only some fifty acres besides this island. The Board agreed with the expressions of the Chairman and resolved to decline the application, on tin* grounds outlined.
