I A soldiers’ ballot for four sections of land at Lauriston (Ashburton County) was held in the District Land Office, Christchurch. There were 21 applicants, of whom the following were successful: — Section 1—251 acres 2 roods 20 porches—Charles O’Brien (Waihao i Downs). j Section 2—259 acres 1 rood 20 , perches—James MoQuilkin (Long- , beach). Section 3 —243 acres 3 roods Samuel Matthews (Timaru). Section 4—248 acres 3 roods—Colin Alexander Fyfe (Dunedin). BUILDING COMMITTEE RESIGN. i AUCKLAND. March 13. | The Building Advisory Committee of Auckland lias resigned in a body. Their resignations were sent to the Minister by telegram. | They stated therein: i “We have had enough. The funeral of John Gibbon?, chief . reporter of the “Evening Post” for many years was held to-day. Thor* was a large and representativ attendance. Messages of condolence and wreaths came from the members of the Cabinet, from Parliament, from the judiciary, from local bodies and from many papers throughout the Dominion. j FATAL yacht accident. The owner Deale Spencer, a well known yacht man and boat builder, together with his soil agixl five ydaps were both ' drowned. 'lbe occupants were the owner and liis son, aged eight. C. Madigan. C. Taylor, G. (’. Edson, G. George-. The hoy Spencer was presumably drawn inside the cabin by the inrush of the water. Ilis father could not swim and was kept afloat by George and Edson, while the yacht Ngahu manoeuvred to pick them up. The Ngahu dropped her dingy, which Madigan secured by swimming. Spencer much exhausted was given a bold oil the gunwale of the dingy, but was washed away by a ])iir son. As («o<)r<j;o wns swimming round, balancing the small eralt, Spencer sank and was was not seen again. Edson and George (lung to the dinghy till rescued with Madigan, by the launch Fleetwing. Edson was so exhausted that restorative measures were applied. Taylor was washed some distance from the others and was picked up by the launch lvava very exhausted. Spencer was a boat builder and leaves a wife and three children. The eldest is live years and the youngest n few months old. A BUILDING SQUABBLE. AUCKLAND, March 14. The Secretary of Auckland Racing Club explains that the permit, for the erection of a new stand was issued last August. In addition, permits for certain alterations were issued by the C ity (Viiineil and as these were not sufficient, the Club applied to the Board of Trade and secured permits on Tuesday which would enable tlq. contractor til finish the work which is not extensive and did not involve £I.OOO. Morrison, Chairman of Wailotara County Council and member of the Harbour Board, announces himself as a candidate for Baton seat in the Liberal interests. Mr Morrison contested the seat at Lh,. last two elections amf was beaten by a narrow majority each time. PRICES TRIBUNAL. AUCKLAND, March 11. The Auckland Brices Tribunal will make a special report to the Board of Trade on the price of wax matches, ! with a certain recommendation.
