MEN LEAVE CROWN FORCES. LONDON, March 12. In the House of Commons, Sir Hamar Greenwood, replying to a. question said there were 2193 resignations and 226 dismissals iroin the Royal Irish Constabulary during .the preceding 12 months. lie said 131 had resigned and 33 were dismissed from the auxiliary police in the same time. QUEEN GETS OXFORD DEGREE. LONDON, March 12. The Queen visited Oxford, and received the D.C.L. degree. It is the first time it has been conferred on a woman in the University s histoiy. CARD SHARPERS. LONDON, March vll. Robert McDonald, aged 53, and previously convicted in Australia and James Ford, aged 23, who have been sentenced at Old Bailey to two Tears hard labour. They lured men to a luxurious flat in Mayfair, rented by a Captain Biggar, who is said to he an Australian millionaire. There men were fleeced often of £2OO or £3OO nightly, playing hanker, though the united hank balance of the card sharpers was only £lO. Biggar, who was an Australian trooper with an artificial leg was assisted by a pretty young wife.; Biggar was charged with the others, • hut h e absconded from hail. Ford claimed to lie an Australian ranker, with £3OOO a year. Detectives after the verdict stated Ford recently obtained £IOOO from a man through a confidence trick. Ford and McDonald were on the verge of collapse when sentenced to hard labour.
PRINCE OF WALES ANI) THE TURF. LONDON, March 11. The King, Prince of Wales, and the Duke of York attended the military meeting at Sandown. The Prince of Wales, despite a strenuous three days in Glasgow, broke the journey to inspect his horses being trained at Bletehley, and after a series of morning galffips motored to Sandown. The saddest man at Sandown to-day is a racecard seller, who sold a card to the Prince of Wales for 2s. without recognising him. When told who his patron was, the man searched his pockets feverishly, nnd found half a dozen florins, but was unable to identify the Prince's coin, which lie desired to retain as a souvenir. THREE NEW CARDINALS. ROME, March 12. At a public consistory, the Papal Court solemnly proclaimed th 0 Archbishops of Philadelpha, Cologne, and Munich to be Cardinals. The proclamation was conducted with a magnificent and brilliant ceremony. PERSIA’S GOVERNMENT. DELHI, March 16. It i;? reported the new Persian Government is approaching France for an. adviser in judicial matters; Britain, for financial experts; Sweden, for additional gendarmerie officers; and America, for assistance? in agricultural development of the country. The Govern ment is liecoming increasingly popular.
INDIAN RESOLUTION
DELHI, March 12. The Indian Government have disallowed the Indians’ resolution in the Indian Legislature that the salary of the Governor of the united provinces to " the same as before the Reform Act. This is the first time the Government has exercised the veto.
