COAL FOR RAILWAYS

H CUE STOCK AT DUNEDIN

DUNEDIN, March 11

A huge pile of coal is now stacked up in the yards adjacent to the Dunedin engine sheds. It is understood that there arc now about 25,000 tons of coal all imported heaped there and another cargo' is expected shortly. In order to be handled expeditiously temporary railway lines are built on the stacks and trucks are run up and the coal emptied. At the present time there is sufficient coal to supply the local demand and that from Invercargill anel Palmerston for the next live or six months. It it is estimated that the coal cost, say, Co per ton, this sum (overing: all expenses, it will be seen that the value of the ‘25,00(1 tons runs out at about £125,000. Nearly all this money goes out of the country.

AN APPEAL CASK. WELLINGTON, March 8,

An application was made at the Supreme Court to-day. before the Chief .Justice, by Percy Reginald Sutherland, clerk of the G.P.0., against E. C. Cutten, chairman of the Appeal Hoard, tor a writ of mandamus regarding the right of appeal.

The application was made to test the interpretation given by the Departmental Appeal Hoard to certain clauses in the Post and Telegraph Amednment Act, 1019, in the case of a junior officer, Sutherland, who claimed that he had not been given that increment to which he was entitled on his reports as to merit and efficiency.

The case was referred to the Appeal Hoard, which stated that there was no right of appeal under such circumstances.

The Court was to-day asked to decide whether that ruling or interpretation was correct or not.

Mr Myers appeared for appellant,'and Mr Skerrett for defendant.
