KST COAST P KICKS TKIBI'NA lAS INVESTIGATIONS WESTPORT, 5 lan'li 8. Asked for a statement coverin'; the Price Investigation Tribunal’s activities, at Westport and other W >’st Coast centres, the Chairman stated that, on the whole, the West Coast had a lesser peri outage of complaints than any other part of the territory covered by the Tiibunal. Kiii|iiiries were at present being conducted into the retail prices of meat, hot repairing charges, coal prices, and other costs closely atfecting the consumer. In Westport the price charged for bacon had been investigated. but. on the present cost, the Tribunal was satisfied the charge was in no way unreasonable. Complains re the prices charged for oil, mattresses, tobacco, and several other lines were received, and investigations were commenced, but it was not possible, during the Tribunal’s short stay, to complete these, but further euipiiii's would be made by one of the Tribunal’s investigating officers, and an early decision given in these matters. One or two complaints made during the Tribunal’s visit to the ('oast were of a rather serious nature, and would probably result in court actions, if the complainants’ statements were found correct. The Tribunal were satisfied that some lines could stand a reduction of the present prices, particularly meat prices, and boot repairs. Indications to this I effect would be conveyed to the paiI ties concerned, which, failing to have the desired effect, would compel the Tribunal to take other and more drastic action. The Chairman stated that must on the other hand, express the gratification of the Tribunal for the assistance given by many persons cited to appear on such short notice. Most statements were given in a very frank manner, which impressed the members very much. The Tribunal were also indebted to the Press for publicity afforded the Tribunal’s activities. Without that, it would bo difficult to make a visit to any centre a success.
