OTIBA TUNNEL
“TRAINS BY CHRTSTMAS.” CHRISTCHURCH Malreh 3
The chance that Public Works Dopartmdut trains might he- running through the Arthur’s Pass Tunnel by Christmas time was mentioned at a meeting of the Progress League executive last evening. Air A. (!. Henderson said that the Prime Minister had said that he thought it possible, assuming that electric locomotives were running, to make makeshift arrangements before Christmas for carrying passengers through the tunnel. It was believed that a general service would be in operation in fifteen months’ time.
“No interruptions occurred at the tunnel during February,” said Air Henderson. “Progress is living made at the rate of one chain or one and a half chains a week, according to the nature of the ground. There is no material danger of delay in the carrying out of the work. At the time of the Prime Minister's visit about fourteen chains of top heading work and perhaps twentyfour chains of concreting remained to lie done.”
