TRENTHAM, March 4

Hopes that the weather would brighten to-day were dashed this morning when a grey sky and thick drizzle blanked Trentliam. Business started promptly at 8 o’clock with the 300yds range of the opening match marking the beginning of C series and giving competitors a chance to find the elevation," in readiness for the first belt shoot this afternoon. The visibility is Variable and at 300 yards promising scores were spoiled by thick rain squalls. 33 out of 35 so far is the best recorded. With one shoot to go before the championship service series is fired, Hester is leading with 180, .followed by McLeay 178. TRENTHAM, March 4

As the morning prograssed, the mist was less troublesome, with the result that some good scores were recorded in the opening match. The event is not yet completed, but the best cards handed in so far are Colquhorn (Hnwera) 31, 35, 33, total 99; Broingan (Gisborne) J 2,34, 33, total 99; Lieut Green t Westport), Glynn (Glenavy) each 98 ; Games (Napier), follows with 96, and then comes a string of 95’s. Nothing much under this is likely to get into the prize list. The weather is dead calm and the light is growing steadier, so the scoring in the Auckland match after lunch should be hot. TRENTHAM, Maich 4.

Two other 99’s appeared later in the opening match. Darkle (Pcioiie), and Hester < Auckland). Harkle’s score 32, 33, 31, was the best of tin* bunch, Colquhorn having the bad luck to be a Ix>int less at the long range which was certainly hard after getting a possible at 500 yards. A few scores are to com * in, but it is unlikely that Darkle will be displaced. Coninbear (Wellington) got 98, Taylor (Inglewood), Reynolds i Christchurch) 97, Harnett (Wakapuaka), Carter (Petone), Gillick (Kiwi), Atkinson (Akarana), Tate

(Wanganui) 96. Tallies of 95 seem as plentiful as blackberries.
