Professor E. Wilson, of the Arnold Arborteum, of Boston, who is touring New Zealand to study forestry, and especially the native trees, is at present on a visit to the West Coast, having arrived at Hokitika last evening.

A live German mine, about 4ft. in height, with five horns about Din. long was found on the beach near Noosa Head (90 miles north of Brisbane) by holiday-makers a few days ago. As there is a. small piece of chain attached to the mine, it is assumed that it was originally anchored, but broke away jjrom the .moorings. Oysters found growing upon the mine were estimated bv fishermen to be about four years oid.

At Wednesday night’s meeting of tho Canterbury Progress League, Air A. G. Steps are being taken to establish another sawmill in' the Kokatalii district, and a plant is now being set up in the vicinity of the Hokitika Gorge to. cut out timber areas taken up in that locality. This is a fairly long run from Hokitika town, but by the use of motor lorries tile transport of the material produced is not considered a serious matter. This fact is an indication of what will be done in AVestland when motor traffic ove r long distances becomes more general.

The proposal to join up the railway line on the AA’cst Coast between Inangalma and AVestport is receiving very strong support. At last evening’s meeting of the Progress League executive, Air A. G. Henderson said:

“The Government is seized of the fact that the line is one of the most important in New Zealand in view of the present industrial situation. A jury when it retires to deliberate upon a ease, is always put in charge of a police constable, one of the orderlies of the Supreme Court for the day. The “twelve good men and true’’ in a case at. the Christchurch gupfreme Court on Wednesday after a retirement of about half an hour, made a certain request to the presiding Judge. After the jurymen had taken their seats, Air O. T. J. Alpers, -counsel for the plain-' tiff, rose and pointed out that during their sojourn in their room the jury had been under the supervision of a constable who had been a witness in the case being tried, a circumstance which, Air Alpers averred was “marked by oroat impropriety.” Counsel for the defence, Mr Al. J. Greason, while admitting the impropriety, pointed out that the constable in question happened to lie tho Court orderly for the day. His Honour agreed that tho proceeding had been hardly proper, and directed that the jury no conversation with the constable in charge.
