A motion that the Socialist Party s.-ould In; granted permission to. hold meetings in lathedral Square on Sunday etching.-; tt as negatived by the City Council. Cr F. 14. Cooke, who submitted the motion ,said that, as it was a party i|iiestion, lie did not expect that ii ll motion would ho carried. Cr. Cooke sa,id that when the war v. as over the. Socialist Party applied several times for a permit to speak oil the north side of the Square. He submitted that the Socialist Party was a ] arty of progress and was entitled to the right to obtain the ear of the public. The Socialist Thirty’s cause' was a i important as the cause of any religious body, and the principle of hold.ng meetings in Cathedral Square had been endorsed by the ratepayers. Cr 11. T. Armstrong, in seconding too motion, said that in his opinion every party should he allowed to hold meetings in the Square, provided the traffic was not blocked and provided the by-laws were not broken. Ho had no complaint to make against, the attitude of the present By-laws committee. They had impartially refused all applications, except that by the Salvation Army. The motion was defeated by eight votes to six, the division being:— For. - Crs. Cooke, Sullivan, Langley, Armstrong, Hunter and the Mayor. Against.—Crs. Beauland, Andrews, l’urgoyne, Jameson, Mclvellar, Harper, Agar and Flosber.

LECTURER'S SUDDEN DEATH. OAMARU, Eeb. 25. .fames Marion, prohibition lecturer, when lecturing at Duntroon last night, dropped into a chair saying he was not well. Medical aid was promptly given, but Marion became unconscious and died at three in the morning. Death was duo to an apoplectic stroke. COMPILER OF STATUTES. WELLINGTON, Fob. 25. Cabinet yesterday decided to appoint Justice Chapman, who shortly retires from the Supreme Court Bench, as Compiler of Statutes to continue the consolidation from 1908, up to which year the statutes were consolidated by a Commission of Judges.
